PostSubject: Live to Pre-Killed to Frozen   Tue Mar 30, 2010 2:23 pm

For those out there who have a snake and say they will take nothing but live, Ive tried everything.

Well just to show you it can be done if you have patience and the snake has weight on them to do some tough love.

My albino since July last year ate nothing but live rats, and i had not time to convert her over. But it became a pain keeping live rats just for her only. Well the rats would out grow her and my freezer got PACKED FAST. Enough was enough.

January 28th was her last live meal. I tried every 5 days like her normal feedings. Well this past week she caved in and has eaten 3 pre killed wean rats with aggression.

My point of all this is presistance and do not give in thinking your snake is starving, cause they are not.

Always when getting them off live, you need to work with pre killed first so its closest to live, as they get good on that, slowly offer frozen. It takes time so do not rush it.

Thank you for the advice! I have been wanting to get both of my normals back on to f/t prey. I will have to try the prekilled and take it from there.

Yes, I am going to get mine switched over too. I now have 7 snakes so it is getting a little much to be feeding live and having to keep a constant supply of live mice and rats around.

I have two that wont eat F/T. The boas were started on em and I dont know if they would even know how to do a kill strike (Ok they would, but they get so lazy about taking the F/T ones in such a casual way) and Im fine with that!

Two of the corns ate F/T from the first feeding. One didnt eat for two weeks, til I offered it a live one, and one held out for a month (Miiha of course) til I gave a live pinky a bath with unscented ivory soap. Ive just gotten her to the point she will eat a live pinky without washing it first, but since shes still on the skinny side, I havent switched her yet. Operitive word...Yet. Mr Noodle will sometimes eat a frozen thawed now. Its sort of back and forth. With six snakes, a gecko and mice its definately time to get them all on F/T.

the whole point of the thread is with tough love of not feeding live to get them off to f/t, will happen. I had no intentions of feeding the albino live ever again. So she had to eat what i offered eventually and she gave in.

I was actually agreeing with getting them on F/T. If I had done that with the newborns, they would probably be dead because they werent eating F/T at all at first. Two took them just fine, two did not, one of them for a month. Ribs were showing and they were not thriving.

As long as you start the process with the snake in good condition, I agree its the way to go. But with neonates that havent eaten their first meal in a month after their first shed? (Im not trying to start an argument, just asking for clarification and opening up discussion)

all hatchlings are fed live mice first 3 months then converted over to f/t. I always feed live mice no matter what since they dont outgrow the snake and i have hundreds at my disposal.
